Create Engaging Video MashUps

Video mashups are an amazing way to grab attention. For example, movie trailers are mashups of a single movie into a shortened version. They give a feeling and may even tell a short story.

You can edit your own mashup using your own video or somebody else’s clips. You’ll want to avoid any copyright infringement AND make engaging media. Below I have explained how to do that, but first… an example.

A Video MashUp Example

The latest mashup by Sleepy Skunk on YouTube combines 160 films released in 2021 into one fast-paced culture chug. Watch the full video:

Watching Sleepy Skunk’s mashup feels like I’m watching the trailer to see the greatest movie of all time, almost like a movie trailer for 2021’s Ultimate Story in which all of our favorite characters exist in the same universe.

Consider Making Your Own MashUp

As a professional video editor, I make montages aka mashups all day long. I have made video mashups to motivate teams using famous movie scenes and I’ve made them to fill space in the background during events. I also make trailers for films or shortened versions of long-form interviews which are attention-grabbing marketing tools.

When To Use Video Mashups

  1. Condense a long piece of content into something shorter.
  2. Combine clips from many different videos into one for a overall comprehensive feel.
  3. Show a cultural trend or highlight an anomaly.

Recently, I looked back at my summer in 2021 to make a mashup of the work I completed during that time.

How To Make Your Own MashUp

When making a presentation of a topic using video (or any visual) you will want to consider using video mashups to grab your audience’s attention. The basic idea is that you’ll use clips, images or iconic imagery that immediately resonate with your audience to create a new feeling or get a new point across from the assembly of those clips.

1. Define Your Limitations

When making video mashups you should define the limits of your source material. You want to pick a focused limitation so you can go deep into it what will make your audience swoon. Unfocused limitations will lead to surface level video mashups. These can feel like lame PowerPoints if not done right.

2. Find Your Clips

You may have shot your own clips or you may be pulling clips from another source. If you are pulling clips from Youtube, you’ll download them using a good video downloader such as the one from Apowersoft. You may also want to limit yourself to clips from the Creative Commons to avoid any copyright infringement.

Avoid Copyright Infringement

You technically can find ways around copyrighted material when making video mashups as long as you are making something completely new from the material. But, there is a lot of gray area so be careful whenever using anyone else’s material if you are planning on using your mashup content to monetize or share publicly.

3. Start Editing

Editing video is really an art form which you will get better at in time, but think about how your clips will work together through their juxtaposition and pay careful attention to moments where you can tie things together or make them stand in contrast using both visual and audio cues.
