What is a Docu-Ad?

If documentaries are real, authentic stories, then docu-ads are real, authentic advertisements. They lean more toward documentary than regular advertisements because if you are selling something, you are going through a real process of manufacturing, delivering and maintaining.

For example, I made the video below, “The Studio 131 Story”, over the course of 3 years with a business. During that time we grew two Youtube channels simultaneously and made a pathway for clients to buy their creations directly from watching the videos. One of the channels was geared toward the manufacuring process and the other was promotional to book more events at the venue. We recently started making videos that will exist only behind a paywall to sell longer E-learning content. All possible from a docu-ad production:

Docu-ads make a history of the process. These videos work great for small businesses as they are trying to grow their presence with content.

Create a Content Base

Content that arises from docu-ads is great for acquiring and keeping customers. What we’re ultimately trying to do with the project is make enough media that all has a consistent theme and style so that stringing it together at the end is seamless and quick.

Docu-ads are great because they not only help a small idea grow into a bigger one, but they also document the improvements by the content creators in delivering their message and refining their focus over time. I’m so grateful for the people who have elected to work with me on projects like this.

Docu-ad Length

Docu-ads don’t have to be as long as the one above. You could probably cut at least 3 short complete versions out of that whole thing to create social media reels and Youtube shorts. I always deliver docu-ads like this. One long video and 1-3 short reels.

Make Your Own Docu-ad?

Yes! Well, you can at least start it. It can’t hurt to sprinkle in some Organic UGC content to bigger projects later if you ever do decide to work with a professional.

Working with a Documentary Filmmaker

Docu-ads aren’t perfect and large companies may steer clear of them to avoid revealing too many trade secrets. If docu-ads are produced by big companies questions start to arise on what they are pushing and who is paying for it. But, small businesses can use this form of selling relatively harmlessly. And big companies can too for that matter. Just keep ethical principles in mind and move full speed ahead.
